Dream Pen Tamesukashi - Toumei
Just like amber, where thousands of years of beauty are preserved, our pen embodies quiet elegance and represents the rich history of Urushi itself.
In continuation of the Tamesukashi pen series, the Tamesukashi Toumei stands out as the inaugural demonstrator Urushi fountain pen designed to celebrate and preserve the artistry beneath. In Japanese, "Toumei" (透明) translates to "transparent," aptly capturing the essence of this pen. The pen's unique transparency is achieved through the use of ABS, allowing the exquisite artistry beneath to shine through. The application of Suki Urushi not only enhances this transparency but also provides a protective layer, resulting in a pen that is visually stunning and robust.
ABS for Dream Pen base
From Ebonite to ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), we found that the durability of material makes the whole difference for fountain pens.
ABS material is one of the kind of plastic that is strongly resistant against chemicals, and heat, and physically sturdy.
Unlike the other type of plastics which most of us imagine as easy-to-break and disposable, ABS for our fountain pen base is tough material that can be used for many years. Especially since it is coated with Urushi, the lifespan can be considered significantly improved.
The Birth of Tame Sukashi
Tamesukashi is a technique of applying Urushi lacquer on top of the desired surface.
The characteristic of the lacquer is slightly translucent yellow color, but it will slowly transfered into more transparent over time. The Maki-e under the Tamesukashi coat will be visibly more vivid due to the characteristic of Suki urushi.
This is an artwork born from the aesthetic philosophy of Wabi-sabi and the spirit of Kintsugi. Therefore, you may observe a few slight imperfections or wood schemas along the finish. As these traits are embraced by multiple layers of Urushi, it will not expand yet instead, contributing to the aging beauty of the whole pen. Please do not mistake these for defects.
Tame-sukashi: A collaboration artwork across Japan
Now, we are glad to have revived these imperfect pieces in a new form - Tame-sukashi 溜透かし. Being inspired by the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of Wabi-sabi and the art of Kintsugi, we have attempted to use Suki Urushi on these pens with the Nurippanashi technique from Aizu, Japan.
To our surprise, the final finish has become a surreal beauty where the delicate details of Maki-e are revealed subtly through the amber translucent depth of Urushi. And with the flow of time, the Maki-e details hidden under can be observed aging beautifully, becoming an indispensable treasure in your collection.
