Description

Tradition x Technology - The STARDUST fountain pens are a fusion of tradition and innovative technology, which combines the modern aluminum body and Japanese natural dyes, creating an artwork that we cannot find anywhere else.

Traditional Japanese color

STARDUST fountain pens feature the traditional colors of Japan - Indigo (藍) and Purple Ore (Shikou - 紫鉱).

Introduced from China, Indigo was first described with the name "Japan Blue" from the Meiji period by a British scientist - Robert William Atkinson. Since then, Indigo - Japan Blue has become a symbolic color of Japan and is attracting more and more attention from the world nowadays. Around the same time, Purple Ore was introduced to Japan in the Nara period (710 - 792).

Similar to Indigo, Purple Ore is a traditional dye that is much loved throughout Japan's history. In fact, until now, you can still observe this shade in textiles, preserved in heritage sites such as Horyuji Temple or The Shosoin Repository - The Imperial Household Agency.

This time, we are proud to present you the first two colors using the Indigo dye: Japan Blue - Midnight Blue and Japan Blue - Sunrise Blue

A special and unique technique

For STARDUST fountain pens, a special technique that can only be practiced by high-skilled artisans is required. This technique has been developed over many years and can be found nowhere else.

All pens are applied with natural dyes by hand under thorough control. After the color application, each will go through an extra step - the "rough hammering". This method requires the craftsmen to carefully hit the pen's body with a rough hammer, which results in a unique hammered surface with no two pieces alike. The final finish possesses a sophisticated sense of warmth that resembles scattering "stardust" when illuminated.

While the color and texture of the final product will slightly vary from piece to piece, we embrace this as a unique characteristic of natural material and the handmaking process.

An artwork of Oita, Japan

More than a fountain pen, STARDUST is a creation that embodies the revitalization of local businesses. It is a collaboration work between many companies in Oita Prefecture, including Wancher. Together, we have been working on this project from the product planning, design, processing, and assembly. The result is a fountain pen that not only carries the Japan's tradition and history but also makes full use of Oita's technological capabilities.
